NOT ALL PETITIONS ARE CREATED EQUAL

Please note: E-Petition 2410 closed for signatures on June 5, 2020 and was presented to the House of Commons on June 17 by the sponsoring MP, Nathaniel Erskine-Smith.  The government response was tabled on September 24, 2020.

The response from the Minister of Agriculture can be read here.   Unfortunately, the government sees no problem with the current situation.

Special thanks to Canadian Horse Defence Coalition Board Member Shelley Grainger for taking the time to set up this Canadian Member of Parliament sponsored e-Petition.

Canadian Horse Defence Coalition would also like to thank Member of Parliament  for Beaches-East York (Ontario) Nathaniel Erskine-Smith for sponsoring this petition.

ASK KOREAN AIR CARGO TO END SHIPMENTS OF LIVE DRAFT HORSES TO JAPAN FOR SLAUGHTER FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION

Every year, approximately 7000 horses are transported by air from Edmonton, Calgary and Winnipeg (Canada) to Japan. These shipments are often conducted monthly or more often, with up to three to four large horses crammed together in wooden crates with little room to move around, let alone lie down to rest. No food or water is provided during the gruelling journey to another continent.

Canadian legislation permits horses to be transported without food and water for up to 36 hours. Sometimes, due to flight delays, the 36-hour period is breached. During one year alone, six horses died during transport, three perished as a result of a landing accident, and one horse was found upside down and dead in his crate.

Canadian legislation prohibits horses over 14 hands high to share a crate with other horses. The law says they must be singly shipped. Their heads must not touch the ceiling of the crate.

Horses must not be deprived of food and water for any longer than 36 hours.

The law says all of the above things. But for reasons of profit, Canada ignores the law.

ASK ATLAS AIR TO END THE LIVE SHIPMENT OF HORSES FOR SLAUGHTER

We don’t know whether Ambassador was born in Canada or the United States. What we do know is that he was shipped by air to Japan for slaughter earlier this year.

Like all foals, his life began in the tender care of his mother whose protective instincts would have prompted her to do anything to protect her baby. His soft ears perked up at the sound of his mother’s nicker as she tenderly encouraged him to stand and wobble about for the first time. Hungrily, he guzzled her rich, warm milk. He loved the spring sun on his back and the wind stirring his short, infant mane as he learned to gallop. With the passing months, he grew faster and stronger and was soon easily able to keep up with his mother as they cantered together.

Perhaps it is a good thing that Ambassador and his mother knew nothing about his future.

CANADA, STOP EXPORTING LIVE HORSES FOR SLAUGHTER

Thousands of live horses are exported each year from Canadian cities (Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg) to Japan, where they are slaughtered for a luxury item, raw horsemeat basashi. [And to South Korea.]

These shipments have been fraught with problems since they began. Repeated investigations have shown dire conditions for these horses who are unfortunate enough to be shipped overseas, then slaughtered on another continent where Canada has no oversight or jurisdiction.

DEMAND EDMONTON AIRPORT STOPS SUPPORTING THE SHIPMENT OF HORSES TO JAPAN FOR SLAUGHTER

Insist that Edmonton  stop allowing live horse shipments out of Edmonton International Airport EIA. They must make the ethical choice to not support live export [of horses destined for slaughter]!

Edmonton Airport supports this industry by allowing Korean Airlines and other live shippers such as Nippon Air and Atlas Air to operate out of it’s facility. Edmonton Airport is complicit in this violent and unsavoury industry by making money from the take off and landing fees paid by these air cargo companies and airlines.

Canadian Horse Defence Coalition has been working to expose the horse slaughter industry and the live shipment of horses to Japan from Canada. Work by animal advocates and investigators have been helpful in exposing this practice which is abhorrent and not supported by the majority of Canadians and other countries around the world.

STOP HORSE SLAUGHTER IN CANADA AND EXPORTS OF HORSES FOR SLAUGHTER

We must STOP THE SLAUGHTER of horses in Canada and THEIR EXPORT FOR SLAUGHTER abroad.

We are talking about a foal hiding in the corner, the pony that you had your first ride on and the old mare who lets every horse-crazy kid pat its head. They, along with the injured sports horses, ponies that children have outgrown, and gentle giants like Belgiums and Clydesdales, are all in danger of being shipped off to slaughter in Canada and abroad.

The majority of Canadians do not believe that horses should be slaughtered (see 1 below) but our governments support the industry.

It is time to tell the Canadian government that we want this industry shut down.

STOP BILL 156 – ONTARIO’S AG-GAG LAW THAT HIDES ANIMAL ABUSE AND TRIES TO STOP ANIMAL ACTIVISM!

“When the suffering of another creature causes you to feel pain, do not succumb to the initial desire to flee from the suffering one, but on the contrary, come closer to him, as close as you can, and try to help him.” – Leo Tolstoy

The Conservative government’s proposed Bill 156 (Security From Trespass and Protecting Food Safety Act) is a dangerous piece of legislation that would hide animal abuse and prevent animal activists from performing their vital role in exposing the horrific treatment of farmed animals.

Bearing witness at animal vigils is a right to freedom of expression.

AMAZON, YOUR CUSTOMERS DON’T WANT PARTNER ATLAS AIR SHIPPING LIVE HORSES TO JAPAN FOR FOOD

Petition AMAZON.com

In reference to the announcement of Amazon’s long-term relationship with Atlas Air Worldwide, and the fact that Atlas Air continues to ship live horses as outlined below, we ask you to use your influence to stop the inhumane shipments of these horses or discontinue your plans to further contract with Atlas Air to deliver Amazon Prime shipments.

Atlas Air transports thousands of live horses each year from Canadian cities  to Japan, where they are slaughtered for a luxury item, raw horsemeat basashi.  The great majority of Americans and Canadians are against the slaughter of our equines for human consumption.

This is currently a hot issue in both the United States and Canada.

END THE TRAGEDY OF HORSE BLOOD FARMS

Although bleeding one’s victims until they are emaciated and weak may sound like the horrifying work of vampires, many will be surprised to learn about a very real industry in South America that preys on the blood of horses in order to turn a profit.

Horse blood farms in Argentina and Uruguay collect blood from pregnant mares to supply the agricultural industry worldwide with a hormone that regulates and synchronizes the ovulation cycles of pigs, cattle and sheep.  This hormone is known as Pregnant Mare’s Serum Gonadotropin (PMSG), and its production is a multi-million dollar international business.

Numerous animal welfare violations have been identified on these blood farms:

  • Violent handling of mares during the blood extraction process
  • Installations and methods of restraint posing a high risk of injury
  • Emaciated and cachectic horses left unattended on vast pastures, as well as weak, dull, lethargic horses
  • Sick, injured and lame horses left untreated
  • No veterinary supervision or care observed
  • Horses dying on the pastures without euthanasia
  • Abortions carried out systematically
  • Insufficient or nonexistent hoof care
  • Lack of man-made shelter or dry resting area.

JUSTICE FOR COCOA AND BELLA #cocoabella

On the morning of April 26, 2018, two days before being moved to a new boarding facility, our two beautiful, innocent and much loved horses were robbed of the rest of their lives due to an inconceivable act.

Our horses were allegedly stolen and sold without owner consent and forged documents led to their unnecessary deaths. We will painfully never see them again. We don’t want to think about the fear, pain and suffering they must have endured. To make matters worse, this incident almost resulted in horses who were treated regularly with vaccines, Ivermectin and other medications to enter our food chain, which would have been a health concern for public at large as Bute is known to be carcinogenic to humans.

STOP CULLING WILD HORSES

Calling on all Canadians to join Cheryl Christin in demanding that the Alberta Government  commits to protecting our wild horses by creating legislation under which our wild horses will be permanently protected and granted the freedom to roam our public Lands. This is their inalienable right.

The Alberta Government’s April 2019 count of these majestic native animals totalled 1,679 down from 1,721 counted in 2018.

The current Memorandum of Understanding for the Sundre area (which safeguarded the horses in that area for a fixed term), will expire in November at which time culling of these beautiful creatures will begin again. This unconscionable licencing process by the Alberta Government allows licencees to trap and slaughter the horses.

PROTECT MONTREAL’S CALECHE HORSES FOR BEING SOLD FOR HORSE MEAT OR LABOUR

On December 31, 2019, the caleches/ horse carriages will be banned in Montreal.

The owners are now starting to sell their horses online and otherwise.

These animals risk being sold into forced labour or sold for slaughter.  The ban was enforced to protect these animals yet they face a grim future. Why enforce this law without a solid after-care plan? Yet again, these animals are in peril. The horses should have been seized long ago, with all the complaints and evidence of mistreatment and neglect.

We, the citizens of Montreal, are tired of the abuse.  Between 2009 and 2015, at least sixteen Montreal carriage horses have died. A ban is now in effect, but no solid after-care plan has been put into place.

While the city of Montreal has offered to buy the animals for $1,000 each and give them to the SPCA, to find them new homes, only one caleche driver has accepted this offer. Many of the others have scoffed at the offer, saying it is too low.

Clearly, a solid rescue solution was critical to the welfare of these poor, innocent animals.

We demand action on the part of the City immediately to put an end to the capitalization of these animals and follow through with a plan to place them in shelters.

Enough is enough! Quebec has frequently been ranked as one of the “best provinces to be an animal abuser.”

This has proven to be true yet again.

DON’T ALLOW INDUSTRY TO DICTATE ANIMAL TRANSPORT ENFORCEMENT

On December 13th, Federal Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau announced that Canadian cattle and dairy producers will be given a “two-year transition period” before enforcement will begin for the amended Humane Transportation of Animalsregulations, even though they were scheduled to come into force February, 2020.

The minister also hinted that the regulations covering cattle may be weakened in the process as “more data on effective solutions concerning the transport of cattle” are gathered (specifically, from research conducted by the Beef Cattle Research Council).

The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association has been hounding the minister since the regulations were released, most recently at an hour-long meeting during her visit to Canadian Western Agribition just a week before her announcement.

STOP THE NEW BRUNSWICK CANADA GOVERNMENT FROM EXTENDING SUNDAY HUNTING DAYS

With the proposed changes to the legislation regarding hunting in NB, hunting will be extended to include EVERY SUNDAY from Thanksgiving to December 31 each year.

According to our Premier this is an added 11-12 SUNDAYS for hunting.

This will restrict those of us who would like to enjoy our trails and woodlands for hiking, biking, walking, and horseback riding.

This will impact individuals, groups, families, horseback riders who enjoy the Fall weather free from Black flies, mosquitoes, horse flies, moose flies, and BULLETS.

Recent research results show that there were approximately 1,000 accidental hunting accidents in  Canada and the USA, and approximately 75 deaths in 2018.

I am aware of posted “No Hunting” signs, as well as Hunter Safety Training.

I have been in the woods, fields, or on dirt roads in the countryside and have heard gunshots close by.

Bullets don’t know where a property lines end. Someone can take a shot, have it miss its target and end up in the body of a family member, hiker, horse, horseback rider.

The provincial government needs to recognize that the greater population of New Brunswickers are not hunters.

We are CITIZENS and TAXPAYERS who want to enjoy our lovely province. Please sign this petition and share it.

Contact your MLAs. Hunting is not the only big moneymaker in NB.

If you have ANY testimonials that you can share regarding your concerns…. please INCLUDE them in your reasons for signing ( comments ).

SAVING THE SABLE ISLAND HORSES FROM SABLE ISLAND

My name is Katarina and I am in grade 4. The reason I am having this petition is because things need to change. The horses on Sable Island are starving to death and freezing from hypothermia in the winter. The government says the horses are wildlife but a seal can swim away and a bird can fly away but what can a horse do other than try to survive.

Horses were dropped off by Thomas Hancock in 1760 and they were used by humans to build life saving stations for humans. In return, the humans left the horses to fend for themselves.

64 horses die on average per year. In 1961, the Diefenbaker government legally protected Sable Island’s horses under the Canada Shipping Act but the law means that you can’t interfere with the horses, you can’t touch them, harass them or even provide veterinary care if they are sick.

A study done in 2018 found 50 carcases on the island. They found the main reason the horses were dying was from starvation and hypothermia. They do not have any shelter from wind and cold as there are no trees or caves on the island. Autopsies showed that the adult horse’s stomachs were full of sand and parasites.
